UNO Navy Information Technology Center Building #4

Project Overview

Located on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, the University of New Orleans Navy Information Technology Building #4 was the last of four identical buildings to be constructed within the University’s Technology Park. The project was a ground-up construction of a five-story, 105,000 SF, structural steel office building with a metal exterior skin. The concrete work on this project was completed in record time which allowed the fourth building to be completed faster than the previous three. This success was a direct result of proper planning and flawless execution.

The willingness of Allan McDonnel and his senior staff in expeditiously solving problems, is the best thing about collaboration with The McDonnel Group. Also, Mr. McDonnel brings alternate means and methods to the table to accommodate tight budgets and retain the design intent of the program...

Lessons Learned

UNO’s Navy Building #4 was the last of four identical buildings to be constructed within this urban campus’ Technology Park. By the time this building was constructed, most of the kinks had been worked out, however, the first three buildings had severe water leaks. Designers and contractors on the other buildings could not locate the source of the water intrusion. During the submittal phase of the project, McDonnel visited the exterior wall manufacturer’s facility. Key personnel attended a training class and noticed that the receiver strip used to attach the panels diverted water into the building in lieu of directing the water to the exterior. As a result, the manufacturer changed their receiver detail for this project, as well as others.
